From Trapping to the Olympics: The Legacy of Canada’s Firth Twins
FasterSkier.com

On April 30th Canada lost Shirley Firth, one of its most impressive, formidable ski legends.

Cross-country skiers born and raised in the North West Territories, Shirley and her twin sister Sharon were as legendary as the Gold Rush itself. Their success on the national and international ski scene were unprecedented, the likes of which Canada would not see again for generations.

Between 1968 and 1984 these two aboriginal women from the Mackenzie Delta achieved unprecedented success in cross-country skiing. For 16 years, the Firth sisters smashed Canadian sport records and dominated the ski scene, both domestically and overseas.  More...

Fast and Female

Fast and Female, a North-America-wide non-profit organization aimed at inspiring girls to stay in sport is launching a brand new initiative called the "Fast and Female Power Hour presented by Buff". As Fast and Female's newest program, the Power Hour is a club-driven initiative whereby female club members between the ages of 9 to 19 get together at the frequency of their choice for a fun and empowering activity that complements their athletic training.

The goals of the Fast and Female Power Hour are to have girls socialize in a fun and non-compeititve context, be inspired, increase their knowledge on key athletic topics (nutrition, physiology, etc), help clubs reinforce the sense of team and unity amongst their female members, and ultimately improve the retention of girls in sports.

Soo Finnish Nordic Ski Club is piloting two sessions this year for club members. Girls can participate in any of the events they are interested in or just one. Mark these dates on your calendar and look for notices via the newsletter and website for further details.

Portable Nordic ski waxing bench for cross country skis.

Local skier, Paul Larson, made a YouTube video to demonstrate his portable wax bench.
The bench is made from plywood scraps, a short 2x4, an old oar-lock and some bolts. It could be used on an existing bench or, in this case, mounted to a folding saw-horse. It fits Salomon Profil, Salomon BC and NNN ski bindings. It makes a sturdy bench for hot waxing, scraping, corking and polishing skis.

Maple Syrup Stampede.
February 2, 2013

It was sunny and cold for the Maple Syrup Stampede.  The ski trail was in excellent condition although ski glide was a little slow because of the -15c temperature.  The turnout was low this year but those who participated had a great time.  The volunteers and organizers did another excellent job and the post race lunch was as good as ever.

The jaw dropping benefits of cross country skiing
Globe and Mail

The options for aerobic exercise during the Canadian winter can seem grim: slipping and sliding along icy streets, pedalling nowhere under the fluorescent lights of the gym, and so on. But there’s a better option, one that, recent research suggests, actually offers unique advantages compared to the alternatives. When it snows, why not make for the cross-country ski trails?  More...
