Snow and Trail Conditions

April 9, 2003

Even though all of the roads and sidewalks in town are bare of snow, there is still lots of snow on the trails. Members of the Soo Finnish Ski Club have been grooming the trails the last 2 weeks and have produced great apring skiing conditions. See Photos of the trails on April 7.

March 31, 2003

The first half of March was colder than normal followed by above seasonal temperatures for the second half. Even though there have been a couple of plus 10 degree days, the snow cover has held up nicely. The STAR trails officially closed on March 23 but the Soo Finnish Ski Club members have continued to groom the trails. There have been some incredible spring skiing conditions; fast corn snow under bright sunny skies.

March 1, 2003

By the end of February, the Sault Ste Marie area has received 303 cm of snow. This matches the average snowfall for the entire year based upon the previous 58 years of local weather statistics. The November snowfall was below average, December snowfall was average and January and February were above average. Measureable snowfall was reported on 34 of the first 55 days of 2003 - measureable snowfall being defined as 0.2 cm or more. January received 105 cm of snow, 23 cm above average, while February's 70 cm was nearly twice the monthly 43 cm average.

Temperature-wise, January ranged from a high of +4.8 Celsius on Jan 7 to a low of -33.3 C on Jan 22. The average was -11.7 for the month, 1.2 degrees below the -10.5 average.

We are continuing to receive snow almost every day making for excellant conditions. The season will most likely extend into April.

It has snowed every day for the past week and the trails are in excellent condition. Photo of Red Pine Trail.

December 24, 2002

The snow finally stopped falling and they got a chance to catch up with the grooming. The trials were in incredible condition today. The snow that fell recently was very moist and it packed extremely well. In speaking with some out of town visitors, we appear to one of the few locations in the East with good snow conditions.

December 22, 2002

Several centimeters of snow fell today and much more is exptected tonight and tomorrow. STAR is behind in the grooming and will hopefully get caught up tomorrow. Last week, there were a couple of days of above normal temperatures and lots of rain. The trails held up though because of the good established base.

November 27, 2002

We have received some fresh snow and the temperature is unseasonably low. Last night it dropped to -19 C. The Crystal 2 km and the Lookout 4 km have been groomed for skating and classic using the large groomer. There is lots of snow with a good base. The Crystal 2 km lights are on from 5 PM to 9 PM daily.

November 4, 2002

We received over 10 centimeters of snow on Thursday, Oct 31. It is now 4 days later and the snow is still on the ground in the northern part of the city and in the bush. With temperatures staying well below seasonal, it is possible that the snow will stay.

October 13, 2002

The timing could not have been better. The day after the Trail Trot, we received our first snowfall. Enough to cover the ground until the next day's sun melted it all. Even though we a still a long ways away from winter, today's snow was an indication how quickly we can move from one season to the next.
