Sault Ste. Marie City Council tonight approved an economic development grant of $7,500 to the Soo Finnish Nordic Ski Club, which obtained permission earlier this month from Sault Ste. Marie Regional Conservation Authority to manage the Hiawatha ski trails.
The grant matches the $7,500 that the ski club must pay to the conservation authority for the use of its trails.
Ward 6 Councillor Frank Manzo and his Ward 5 counterpart David Celetti pointed out that the club has recently received $30,000 plus three groomers as a result of the folding of Sault Trails and Recreation.
Manzo and Celetti tried unsuccessfully to get the $7,500 municipal contribution to be made as a loan, not as a grant.
