And They’re Off - Ontario Cup#1 Tuesday January 8, 2008 - By Stephen Mallinger The Soo Finnish Nordic Ski Club Race Team travelled to Duntroon for Ontario Cup # 1 from January 3 - 6. Racers competed in a Pursuit race, knockout Sprints and the interval Classic distance event. The first day of racing saw a 2-hour delay due to a -26 Celsius temperature at start time. Andrew Barbeau and Erin Mallinger just missed the podium with 4th-place finishes. The Sprints were thrilling: Phil Widmer and Chandra Crawford of the National Team won the Open Men and Women categories. It was wonderful for our young racers to be able to watch an Olympic Gold Medalist compete. Andrew Barbeau won a silver medal and Frances Mallinger won a bronze medal. Hilary Mallinger and Erin Mallinger qualified for the A Finals and came 5th and 6th respectively. The Classic race took place in +3 degrees conditions. Frances won another bronze and Andrew had a 5th place finish against some excellent skiers from Nakkertok. Spencer Hogan, Danielle Buchner and Jack Carlyle competed very well against strong opposition. |
