SFNSC members are well aware of the wonderful ski trails at Hiawatha Highlands. The trails can also be enjoyed in the spring, summer and fall. Walking or running the trails can help cross country skiers maintain fitness levels and get ready for the next ski season.
There are many benefits from trail running. Trail running can help you develop agility as you run on uneven ground and avoid obstacles. There is less pounding on your joints as you run on gravel and dirt surfaces compared to concrete sidewalks and pavement. The uneven terrain and twists and turns of the trails helps keep you alert and makes the time fly by.
If you do plan to run or walk on the trails here are some useful tips:
- Run on trails that are suitable for your level of fitness. Choose flat trails and shorter trails if you are a beginner or more challenging trails if you are an experienced runner.
- Slow down on the hills and watch your footing.
- Run or walk with a friend.
- Plan ahead let people know where you are going and what trails you plan to be on.
- Make sure you are familiar with the trail. Things look at lot different than they do in the winter. Look at the trail map and make sure that you know where you are going. There are ski trails, mountain bike trails, sections of the Voyageur Trail and other trails in the area. Don’t get lost.
- If you have a cell phone consider taking it with you. Coverage may be spotty, however.
- Watch for wildlife. Deer are in the area and the odd bear has been seen from time to time. Be aware of what to do if you encounter a bear. The MNR Bear Wise website provides useful information.
